Design Intention

Utilizing inspirations from natural micro organism into geometric architectural world.

As architecture designers, we are inspired by many different objects and ideas around human society. Modern architectural designs are re-iterated to produce new functions and forms. However, our design originates from nature which is invisible to human eyes.

By researching microorganisms and objects that are only visible through the microscope, designers are enabled to witness geometrical formation created by nature. It is our job to capture and record the natural formation and translate it into our own architectural sense to utilize in designing structures.

Interpretation of the Natural formation

I have found a way to transfer natural design into an architectural structure. Primarily, I've researched the movement of the spider legs to create a program. I came up with the system & program drawing of the leg.

The maximum and minimum angular movement, mechanical spider leg movement, and the positioning of the joints were placed to discover the movement system. Each 6 sequence of movement (bottom to top) demonstrates the 2 pairs of spider legs. The small circles and big circles were marked to emphasize the wide and narrow movement during the cycle of the movement.

The program and system drawing gave me the inspiration to transform the spider legs into an arch and create a concentric point for the arches to meet, to mimic the spider joints. Through Rhino 6 modeling software I was able to create underground, surface, and upper level, a total of 3 stores of the massive structure that holds many endangered animals and plant species.
